Variety (aka Loaded Deck)
On a quiet Summer night, police cars surround a local Variety Store. In the darkness, a group of five strangers come together to play poker, on the table is the jackpot of $50,000. The rule is no folding and no quitting. For the players Victory means more than the money which lays before them.
Pete a Dim-witted thug evicted from the mob, plays for a 2nd chance at his underworld career. Meshee, a cunning young woman with a score to settle, plays to win back the money which she feels is rightfully hers. Joe, a dead-beat petty thief, trapped in a web of deceit, plays chivalrously to help Meshee. Holly, a Gun-toting spiritual pacifist at a moral impasse plays for a chance to start a new life. Irving, the store’s preppy, disgruntled employee plays to free himself from life’s monotony.
Moving in and out of flashback, the film intertwines the complex lives of these intriguing individuals, charting the circumstances and events which brought them together.
